Eristic An eristic business person lays in wait for a client to make an inadvertent error in word or fact. They use the errors against the client as a rational for charging more money or gaining more consideration in a deal. This is a very sophisticated scam that turns the logic of the customer on end. The thrust of the ploy is to confuse the customer to the point they relent delving any farther into the nefarious actions of the business. Predatory eristic people appear slightly detached or disembedded from ordinary people since they do not vest much in social intimacy; they exhibit only feigned intimacy. Aggressive eristic people, including clients and business owners, maneuver their "mark" into making poor decisions. For example, an automotive parts supplier might sell an engine part such as a starter or alternator with a warranty. But, to realize the warranty there must be an identifying sticker on the part. The sticker itself may be designed to fall off under conditions of heat and vibration therefore voiding the warranty. Another frequently seen tactic is for business to give the customer a receipt on paper that easily fades in a few months thus making it impossible for the customer to return defective merchandise. The merchandise itself may be marginal or toss away parts retrieved from the garbage at a factory site and sold as new.
The term eristic behavior applies to clients as well
